Widow Sponsorship
Across Afghanistan, millions of women are living as widows after decades of conflict, illness, and hardship. Many are left as the sole carers for their children, with no income, no protection, and few opportunities to rebuild their lives.
Widow sponsorship offers more than survival. It provides stability, restores dignity, and gives women the chance to care for their families without fear or humiliation.
The reality facing Afghan widows
More than 2.5 million women in Afghanistan are widowed, many having lost not only their husbands, but their homes, livelihoods, and access to education.
With limited opportunities to earn an income, widows often face impossible choices. Some are forced to send their children to work, others rely on begging or unsafe labour simply to survive. Emotional trauma, isolation, and poverty compound the daily struggle.
Every mother deserves the chance to provide for her children with dignity.
Why widow sponsorship matters
Widow sponsorship meets urgent needs while laying the foundation for long-term recovery. Through consistent support, women are able to stabilise their households, care for their children, and begin rebuilding their lives.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
“The one who strives to provide for the widow and the needy is like the one who fasts during the day and prays throughout the night.” (Sahih Bukhari)
Caring for widows is not only an act of compassion, it is a powerful form of worship and a source of lasting reward.
What your sponsorship supports
Your support helps widows move from crisis to stability through:
- Monthly household support including food and essential supplies
- Access to skills training and income-generating opportunities
- Safe transitional housing where needed
- Emotional support and community connection
This holistic approach ensures widows are not trapped in dependency, but supported towards independence.
Real lives, real change
Hadia, a 42-year-old widow from Herat, became the sole caregiver for her three children after losing her husband to illness. With no income and little support, she was forced to beg on the streets to feed her family.
Through Aryana Aid’s Widow Family Sponsorship Programme, Hadia began receiving monthly household support, including food and essential supplies. With this stability, she can now provide regular meals, keep her children in school, and rebuild a sense of safety and hope for her family.
Hadia’s journey reflects what sustained care can achieve when widows are supported with dignity.
Impact last year
Last year, your generosity helped Aryana Aid support widows and their families through structured programmes:
- 48 widows joined the Women’s Empowerment Scheme
- 25 widowed families received direct sponsorship support
Each supported widow represents a family protected from hunger, exploitation, and long-term hardship.
Sadaqah Jariyah and lasting reward
By sponsoring a widow, you contribute to Sadaqah Jariyah, a charity whose reward continues beyond the moment of giving.
As widows gain stability, skills, and independence, the benefit of your support continues through their children, families, and communities. This is a legacy of compassion that endures in this life and the next.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“The best of people are those who are most beneficial to others.” (Daraqutni)
